5 signs your loved one may benefit from in-home support

By We Care Home Health Team

Nobody wakes up one morning and suddenly needs help with everything. It usually happens slowly. Small changes that are easy to explain away. "Mom's just tired." "Dad's always been forgetful."

But sometimes those small changes are telling you something worth paying attention to. Here are five common ones.

1. Changes in personal hygiene

This is often the first thing families notice. Maybe your parent, who always took pride in their appearance, is wearing the same clothes several days in a row. Or skipping showers. Or not brushing their teeth.

It doesn't mean they've stopped caring. The physical act of bathing might have become difficult, or they're just too tired to keep up with their routine.

A caregiver can help with gentle reminders, assistance getting in and out of the shower, and making the whole process feel less exhausting.

2. Missed medications or doctor's appointments

If your loved one is forgetting to take their medications, or taking them at the wrong times, that's a safety concern. Same goes for missed doctor's appointments or confusion about their health care schedule.

Managing medications gets complicated fast, especially with multiple prescriptions. A companion or home support caregiver can help organize medications, set reminders, and make sure appointments happen on time.

3. Social withdrawal

Has your loved one stopped calling friends? Turning down invitations they used to enjoy? Seeming lonely or isolated when you visit?

Loneliness is one of the biggest health risks for older adults. It's linked to depression, cognitive decline, and even physical illness. And sometimes the barrier isn't desire. It's transportation, energy, or confidence.

Adult companion services exist for exactly this. A caregiver can provide conversation, go with your loved one to activities, and help them stay connected to the things they enjoy.

4. The house isn't being kept up

Look around the next time you visit. Dishes piling up? Expired food in the fridge? Laundry that hasn't been done? Clutter that could cause a fall?

A messy house isn't a character flaw. It's often a sign that daily tasks have become too much to handle alone. Homemaker services cover things like light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, and grocery shopping, so your loved one can live comfortably in a clean, safe space.

5. Falls or close calls

Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults over 65. If your loved one has fallen recently, or had a close call, it's worth taking a hard look at their living situation.

Sometimes the fix is simple. Better lighting, grab bars in the bathroom, removing throw rugs. But falls often point to bigger issues like balance problems, medication side effects, or muscle weakness.

Having a caregiver present during high-risk times like getting out of bed or showering can prevent falls before they happen.

What to do if you notice these signs

Recognizing that your loved one needs help doesn't mean you've failed at anything. It means you're paying attention.

Here's what we'd suggest:

  • Have an honest conversation. Talk to your loved one about what you've noticed. Approach it with love, not alarm. Most people are more aware of their struggles than we realize.
  • Start small. In-home care doesn't have to mean full-time support. Many families start with just a few hours a week for housekeeping, errands, or companionship.
  • Talk to their doctor. A physician can help identify underlying causes and recommend the right level of support.
  • Call us. We're happy to talk through your situation and answer questions. No pressure, no commitment.
